When its time to study… study.

In a nationwide study, students between the ages of 14 and 22 were questioned on the topic of studying for exams. 82% of students who knew weeks in advance that an exam would be taking place, admitted to putting off studying until the last moment. Often times, cramming studying into the night before, or even the morning of the test.

Does this sound like you? One of the key factors in being able to properly pass a test or exam is to make sure that you are as prepared as you possibly can be. Procrastinating the inevitable, which in this case is studying in advance, will only make matters worse in your attempts to pass your test.

There are a few simple tasks and tips that you can do to better prepare yourself  so that your mind is in the correct state, along with your body so that you can make the most of the time that you give yourself to study for any given exam.

  • First, it is important to set the mood. Just like with any event that may be happening in your life or someone else is life, most times people set the mood. By this we mean that you’re having people over to your house, what you normally do? Of course you will clean your house and mixer that is presentable for your guests may be coming over. If you’re going to watch a movie, most times you dim the lights and maybe make some popcorn. The same can be said preparing yourself to study for any exam. Setting the mood is extremely important it can be done quite easily.
  • Efficient lighting is important to making sure that you’re able to read efficiently without giving yourself a headache or becoming tired.
  • Remove any audio distractions. By this we mean no TV, no radio, no headphones and no telephone.
  • No food or drink. By this we do not mean that you should not allow yourself the time for a snack or for a drink, but did not keep these in your study area. If you’re thirsty get up from your desk or your study area go get yourself a drink and come back. The same thing goes with your eating situation.
  • Set up a study area. A study area should not be a lazy boy, couch or even a bed. Your study area should consist of a firm chair in which you sit upright, and that that all possible that seat or chair should be positioned in front of a desk or table. I table, we are not referring to a coffee table that may be in front of the television. Studying in your kitchen or bedroom, while often times easily lead your mind away from study material and cause you to daydream about other activities which you may see around you.
  • Set a time period in which to start and finish your daily study. Setting a time will help you to set a routine in your daily life for study. Getting yourself into routine is one of the best things that you can do when it comes to studying for exams. Your set time does not have to be 100% strict, however do your best to stick to the time that you set for yourself. If you need more time, take more time, but do not burn yourself out. You must realize when you’re over studying, and be willing to walk away for the day.
