A registered nurse’s tasks are to treat patients, to help make the people aware of different medical conditions and to provide assistance to a patient’s family members. They record their patient’s medical history then they perform diagnostic tests and analyze the results to detect possible health problems that may need immediate attention. They are also trained to operate medical equipment, provide treatment and medications and assist on patient follow-up and rehabilitation. People who have registered nursing degree and education help their patients and the families on how to deal with their sickness or health problems. They give them information on post-treatment home care needs such as diet and nutrition, exercise programs, medication and physical therapy.
Registered nurses use a care plan to deal with their patients. These plans consist of various activities like how to administer medication and to make sure that the dosage is correct, managing and monitoring intravenous lines for fluid, medication or blood products, providing therapy and treatment, observation and recording of observations and they also work hand-in-hand with the doctors and other healthcare professionals. Some of the registered nurses also supervise the tasks given to licensed nurses or nursing aides. And those that have completed advanced studies may administer diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as prescriptive authority. The room for advancement in the nursing field is wide open, and depending on furthered education levels, the sky is the limit when it comes to promotions and registered nurse salary caps.
Their tasks vary from one registered nurse to another. A registered nurse’s responsibility is determined by his or her work setting and patient population served. They can also specialize in more than one area in patient care. Perioperative nurses work in operating rooms and assist surgeons while diabetes management nurses help patients to manage their diabetes. Dermatology nurses are focused on patient’s skin problems and those that work with the elderly are called geriatric nurses. Registered nurses may also choose to combine their specialties. There are a lot of options that they can choose from depending on their job.
There are also registered nurses who choose to specialize in a type of treatment or perhaps, their work setting. Some nurses are interested in treating patients with a variety of illness and disorder in a doctor’s clinic or office. These nurses are called ambulatory nurses. Critical care nurses are the ones that take care of patients with serious and acute illnesses that require strict monitoring and extensive medication procedures. Emergency or trauma nurses are situated in hospitals or stand-alone emergency departments. They administer care to patients with life-threatening disorders. Those that are tasked to treat a patient’s mental and spiritual health are called holistic nurses. They do this by acupuncture, massage, aroma therapy, etc. Home health care nurses work with patients at home. They are focused on the follow-up care for patients who got out from the hospital or rehabilitation centers.
Registered nursing professionals could also be hospice and palliative care nurses who are focused on improving the quality of life for terminally ill patients. Infusion nurses are the ones responsible for giving medications, fluids and blood to patients by injecting it through the veins. Long-term care nurses cares for patients with chronic physical or mental disorders and medical surgical nurses on the other hand give medical health promotions and care to those who have different medical or surgical diagnoses. There are various options that a registered nurse has as career opportunities. That’s why their job never gets boring as they could always branch out to a new and different medical area.
